Crinolines reached their peak in 1861, The Daily Dispatch dubbed the craze as ‘Crinoline Mania’.
Crinolines were worn as a cheaper and more mobile item of clothing, away from all the petticoats women wore in the past to fill out their skirts. However, Crinolines often caused havoc for the women wearing them, often getting stuck in doorways, pushing people around, flying up when a women sat down too fast. Not to mention causing deaths, by catching a light by a woman warming herself by the fire, or even putting things in and out of the oven.
Many women breathed a sigh of relief when the full skirt gradually went out of fashion.
